Punjab Kings' Captain Penalized for Over-Rate Violation
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] - On May 1, during the 49th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS), faced a fine due to a slow over-rate while competing against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
This incident marked PBKS's first infraction of the season under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate issues. Consequently, Iyer was fined INR 12 lakh, as reported by a sports news outlet.
Iyer's performance away from home has been impressive, complemented by a half-century from Prabhsimran Singh and a hat-trick by Yuzvendra Chahal, leading PBKS to a four-wicket victory that knocked CSK out of playoff contention.
After the match, Iyer expressed his enthusiasm for run-chases, stating that he excels when facing a substantial target. He remarked, "I enjoy chasing on any ground. I feel energized when there’s a high score to chase, and it’s crucial to take charge and build momentum for the team as the other batters come in."
Reflecting on his struggles at home, where he has yet to score a fifty, he commented, "I prefer to focus on the present and react to each ball. My location doesn’t affect my approach. I’ve been practicing extensively in the nets against fast bowlers, especially with the new ball, which has boosted my confidence. I maintain a positive attitude whenever I step onto the field, and I believe I’ve ticked all the necessary boxes for success."
Discussing the team's strategy, Iyer mentioned a conversation with coach Ricky Ponting about raising their intensity against CSK's formidable death bowlers. "Our plan was to take on the bowlers with our power hitters coming in later. When I arrived at the crease, I focused on assessing the wicket before accelerating my play. Prabhsimran and Priyansh have been exceptional, displaying smart batting rather than just slogging," he concluded.
